About Shanghai Hailin Jazz Orchestra

The Shanghai Hai Lin Jazz Orchestra was established in May 2006 with the reputation for distinctiveness and innovation of classical Jazz. It is the Orchestra’s mission to deliver and promote innovative metropolitan jazz culture to the wider community.

The Managing Director of the Orchestra is the well-recognised singer Ms. XiaoLan Ji and the renowned classical jazz musician Mr. Deren  Zheng is the Orchestra’s Musical and Artistic Director General. 

This fine Orchestra endeavours to deliver the finest jazz music to its audience, with the joint effort from the members of the Orchestra, a group of prominent and highly experienced classical jazz musicians.

Since the establishment of the Shanghai Hai Lin Jazz Orchestra, it has performed in a number of national and international cultural communication programs, charity events, commercial exhibitions, and has received positive feedbacks and national recognition for its heartfelt jazz performances. The group was also honoured with accreditation of Contract-honouring and Faith-keeping Enterprises among Zhejiang Province, Jiangsu Province and Shanghai City in Yangzi River Delta.

In September 2007, Shanghai Hai Lin Jazz Orchestra collaborating with Shanghai Oriental Art Centre, organized the Brand Concert called the Classical Shanghai Night - Weekend Jazz Salon, which secured them with a nationwide recognition and approval of its brilliant ensemble performance. On the Shanghai Municipal Government’s official website, the performance was remarked as “the first jazz show performed in the first-rated theatre”. 

From September of 2007 to 16th October of 2009, the Orchestra had performed a total of fifty live shows, many of which lasted from the early morning till the closing time of shops. The Orchestra’s potential is evident by public support and its strong teamwork. The long-standing popularity is one of its kinds in the Jazz world across the globe, which is why the Orchestra is remarked by the Shanghai Media Group as “Shanghai’s top Jazz Orchestra”.

Between 10th to 12th September 2009, Orchestra had performed Jazz Shanghai Night Grand Concert at Shanghai’s Lan Xin Theatre in three consecutive shows, full house in all three days performances.

In October 2008, Orchestra performed at Shanghai World Expo’s Six Hundred days Program, a trial period for welcoming Shanghai World Expo in 2010; and the 10th Shanghai International Arts Festival, in anticipation to promote World Expo’s first song, novel composition, “Our City, Our Home”, and together with Germany’s Jazz Orchestra performed on stage world famous melody “Rose Rose I love you”, received high applause and cheers from the crowd. 

In 2008, the Orchestra went on Shanghai Media Group’s weekend television show:  Reminisce Classical Music, and played as the backdrop Orchestra for renewed 1930s Singer Ms. Wu, Ying Yin.

In March 2007, Orchestra received invitation from Hong Kong’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department to perform three shows “Feverish Shanghai Night” at its city town centre. They were welcomed by many fervent fans and friendly pursuers. It was not until September 2008 when the Orchestra accepted Jiang Yin city Cultural Group’s invitation and start the journey of touring in Yangzi River Delta.

Also happened in 2008 was the heartbreaking tragedy Wen Chuan Earthquake, as a result, the Orchestra invited the renowned composer Mr. Tu Ba Hai to compose a new song “Boundless Love” expressing the souls of the deceased and what have been learnt from what in May 12th Wen Chuan Earthquake. The Orchestra performed live at the disaster zone and all the money earned from the event was contributed to the government of Si Chuan Province in order for them to rebuild the lost homes for many.

In recent years, Shanghai Hai Lin Orchestra has continued to uphold its dream and belief by challenging the difficulties--beautifying tunes and bringing forward heartfelt original works to its audiences, such as “Next Door Neighbour Swing Melody”, “Carribean Bossa” and so forth. The Orchestra has been involved many times with the community, teaching the community of Jazz and performing live jazz music, which were well received by the community. The Orchestra has participated in many local charity activities, like the suburbs of Lu Wan, Jing An, and Pu Dong .

Ms. XiaoLan Ji, a renowned accomplished female vocalist, one of the top ten Shanghai singers 

Ms. XiaoLan Ji is an inspirational vocalist and has dedicated much of her time to the Classical Jasmine Night tours around China. From her performances, she was able to entwine time essence with new ideas to bring classical jazz music to the next level, bringing in a new jazz charm.

Ms. XiaoLan Ji has a ravishing yet transparent and angel-like voice. Her voice can cover an incredible range of pitches and can produce rich and harmonious tones of different characteristic sounds.  Anyone that has heard of Ms. XiaoLan Ji’s songs would say that her voice would send tingles down your spines and make your blood boiling, that is how spectacular her voice can be. 

Beside her naturally angel-like voice, she’s also known to deliver different musical interpretation to different audience under different atmosphere. Her shows would bring smiles to your face and attracts tears from your eyes. Her voice can be so immense that they will make you feel as if you are living within her music.

Ms. XiaoLan Ji has led more than 50 shows and performed hundreds of famous and classical jazz songs in different languages, such as, Chinese, English, Japanese and Latin. She can deliver the best in classical jazz music. Her dedication to music and ther fans won her widespread of loyal audiences across the nation.

She has also been accredited from musical professional bodies and music critics of her professionalism and her wondrous voice. She has been awarded with many musical awards nationwide and she has also contributed more than 100 soundtracks to different films and television shows. She is known by Music Critics as the “Evergreen Tree of the Musical World”.

Mr. Deren Zheng    Bassist, Composer, and National Principal Performer in the Orchestra

Mr. Zheng, De Ren studied at Shanghai National Musical Conservatorium from1943 to 1946. In 1946, he was invited to join Shanghai Symphonic Orchestra as a member of young base violinist performer, later became the Minister of the Orchestra. Between 1956 to 1985, Mr. Deren Zheng was appointed as Bass Professor of Shanghai National Musical Conservatorium.

Since 1942, Mr. Deren Zheng had performed jazz music at Shanghai ballrooms and Shanghai Paramount Hall, as well as at France Head Quarter and so forth. Mr. Deren Zheng was an important member of the first Chinese Jazz Orchestra Group.

In 1956, Mr. Deren Zheng was in charge of setting up the first Chinese light music orchestra. Since 1985, he has composed, conducted, and produced six Jazz CDs,which have been distributed nationalwide. 

Mr. Deren Zheng is currently the Senior Consultant of Shanghai Zuo Lin You She Cultural Art Communication Pty Ltd and the Musical and Artistic Director General of Shanghai Hai Lin Jazz Orchestra.
