The Royal Academic orchestra traces its heritage back to 1627, when King Gustavus Adolphus “ordered his musicians to come to Upsala, to instruct studiosos in musica and correct the inflexibiliem vocem.” The Uppsala Royal Academic Orchestra is one of the oldest in Europe.

When Olof Rudbeck was rector, in 1661, music was given a more prominent role . Besides the major church holidays and royal visits, the musicians were to perform at academic festivals, inaugurations of rectors, and conferment ceremonies, as well as at grand banquets.

Upsala Royal Academic Orchestra is one of the famous orchestra in Sweden. By the invitation, the Royal Academic Orchestra takes part in 8–10 festive occasions per year and gives lots of concerts on its own, which means that rehearsing can sometimes be extremely intensive. And the Orchestra has toured in more than 30 countries such as USA, Spain, Finland, Holland, Austria, France, the United Kingdom, Canada and so on.

The Orchestra’s repertoire consists largely of Viennese classics, but more unusual works are also performed, such as pieces by Reger, Elgar, and Kokkonen. As of 2000, the Orchestra is led by Professor Stefan Karpe.

Director musics Stefan Karpe (born 1962) has the orchestra on a patch of continuous musical development. Karpe has been director musices and professpr of orchestra conducting since 2002. He is also chief conductor and artistic director of the DalaSinfonietta in Falun. The role of the director musices is to promote music by stimulating the interest of faculty, staff and students. The tittle of director musices has been held by many prominent conductors and composers. Some of Karpe’s predecessors,in chronological order, are Johann Christian Friedrich Haeffner, Hugo Alfven,Lars Erik-Larsson,Carl Rune Larsson and Per Ake Andersson.

Desides its participation at academic festivities the Royal Academic Orchestra gives public concerts and goes on tour in Sweden and abroad. For some time now, the orchestra has commissioned a new work by a Swedish composer every year. Thus far, the orchestra has collaborated with and played works by Anders Hillborg, Mats Larsson Gothe, and Anders Widmark.

Stefan Karpe – Artistic Director

Director musices—this is the title borne by the conductor of the Royal Academic Orchestra, Stefan Karpe, who leads the orchestra. Stefan has a solid background as a musician and is delighted to share his knowledge with curious and eager orchestra members.

Stefan Karpe studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, with Professor Jorma Panula. He led his diploma concert in 1992, featuring Mahler’s 4th Symphony. Karpe has conducted most Swedish orchestras and, among other accomplishments, has served as assistant to Esa-Pekka Salonen together with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. He has worked for several years at the Netherlands Opera, Amsterdam, with music by Stravinsky and Claude Vivier, among other composers.

Karpe has conducted in France, England, Spain, and Norway and given many concerts in Finland. Among these, Karpe opened the Helsinki Festival together with the Helsinki Municipal Orchestra in 1996 and gave an EBU concert with the chamber orchestra Avanti!. He has also conducted in Australia a number of times and toured Australia with the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra. In the summer of 2001 Karpe worked at the festival in Aix-en-Provence with Verdi’s Falstaff. The same production appeared in the spring of 2002 at the Théatre des Champs-Élysées, Paris.

As of January 2002, Karpe is Director musices, professor of orchestral conducting at Uppsala University. Stefan Karpe is also the artistic director and principal conductor of the DalaSinfonietta as of January 2004.
