Highlighting two imaginative vocalists Coco Zhao and Heidi Krenn in one concert is simple when they blend together so effortlessly in terms of sound and temperament. With the playful Ménage à troiswhich includes Steve Sweeting on Piano, Tinho Pereria on bass, and Ronnie Williams on drums, They can shift from a classic bluesy standard like Stolen Moments, to the soaring and virtuosic Ha Gente Aqui, to the energetic Taiwanese mountain song Ali Shan de Guniang and back to the land of Harlem swing with Stompin' at the Savoy. And there is always a Wild Card on the program where anything whimsical can happen without prior arrangement. This is often where these two singers and musicians shine, because one never knows what spontaneous gems will emerge. And in the end, that is at the heart of the most exciting jazz. |
