With the true original sound and authentic costumes, this band is bringing back some of the greatest moments in pop history.
In 1996 the band WATERLOO was formed by Katja Nord and Camilla Hedrén and started performing in clubs around Sweden. The band immediately began to make exact copies of the famous WATERLOO costumes. The former ABBA saxophone player, Uffe Andersson, was the band's guest of honour at the very first WATERLOO show. It took place in a small local club in Stockholm. The club was for once packed and the attention was unusually directed at the stage. When the gig was over sweat was dripping from the walls, and the audience did not only shout, one more time, they wanted to see the full show from the beginning and shouted, "Play it all from the beginning!"
History of WATERLOO
2005 In March it was time to tour Scandinavia again with ABBA the Show, three weeks of touring, with sold out concerts. Those who missed them during the Scandinavian tour will get another chance on July 30 in DALHALLA, Sweden. ABBA the Show one of the two best selling acts this summer, together with Rhapsody in Rock. WATERLOO is touring USA with ABBA the Music in the summer of this year.
2004 During the nasty winter weather WATERLOO went on a short promotion tour to the Philippines, hoping to get a day on the beach –but no! four hectic days remaining of TV-performances, press conferences, radio interviews and two packed concerts and the associated autograph hunters.
The Philippines was followed by a promotional tour in Holland, which proved it self very successful. ABBA’s international fan club saw the show and was thrilled and they appointed WATERLOO to be the “Best ABBA tribute band in the world”. Not bad at all!
For the third year in a row they flew across the Atlantic Ocean for yet another “ABBA the Music” US tour. The sold out opening show was held at no less than the distinguished Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. WATERLOO was now established as the US no one ABBA tribute band!
A very successful Dutch tour early in the year lead to another week of touring in Holland during the autumn. During the later they had the honour to be able to present yet another of ABBA’s original musicians, Lasse Wellander. This was very flattering as WATERLOO is the only ABBA tribute band he has agreed to perform with. The reason being, the high quality of WATERLOO compared to other ABBA tribute bands.
The year ended with the Christmas show, RING RING, (goes Gothenburg). The show received the best reviews of the Christmas shows that year.
2003 In the summer, WATERLOO returned to the USA, touring with “ABBA the music” for four weeks. They are now well established in the American market and are returning to several clubs and arenas they have previously been playing at such as The “BB Kings Club” in New York, “Hyannis” in Cape Cod and “Clarkston” outside Detroit.
The autumn became one of the busiest periods ever for the band as they went on a two weeks promotional tour of Germany, a two weeks Scandinavian tour and 21 gigs with the Christmas show “RING RING”, (from Hepstars to Duvemåla) in “Vinterträdgården” at Grand Hotel, Stockholm.
Katja and Camilla were asked by the production company “Alexandersson and Öhman” if they wanted to participate in this show (RING RING) as they’re previous collaborations had been highly successful. The aim was to create a show built upon the work of Bjorn and Benny and the natural choice was Sweden’s, by far most successful ABBA tribute band.
Bengt Palmers wrote the script and was the presenter of the show, Roine Söderlund directed the show. For the show WATERLOO performed along side Niclas Andersson, a successful musical star and Karin Glennmark, who had previously worked with ABBA.
The show became an instant success and WATERLOO now became acknowledged by the Stockholm audience as a well established tribute band. The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet wrote: “Katja and Camilla are hard to up stage as ABBA look a likes”
2002 WATERLOO continued doing a lot of festivals and corporate shows in Scandinavia. During the spring they did a second tour with "ABBA - THE SHOW", this time of Estonia, Sweden and Denmark.
A two-week tour in Eastern USA took place during the summer. "ABBA - THE MUSIC" which was the new name of the show, was performed for over 20 000 people, and original ABBA musicians were included in the show, as guests of honour. Several venues were sold out, and the tour was a success. That led to a second tour, in October the same year, this time in Arizona.
The former original ABBA musicians who took part in the show are: Rutger Gunnarsson (bass), Ola Brunkert (drums), Uffe Andersson (sax), Mats Ronnander (guitar and vocals).
In September WATERLOO performed in Czech Republic at the charity festival "Artists against Flood". This event was broadcasted on Czech national TV.
2001 WATERLOO visited Asia again. In Vietnam this time, where they toured for two weeks, in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The news agency Reuters was there and made a 9 minute review which was broadcasted on Euro News several times.
WATERLOO started to collaborate with the Danish production company CSB and they produced "ABBA - THE SHOW", the story of ABBA presented by WATERLOO together with London National Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Matthew Freeman.
During the autumn "ABBA - THE SHOW" preformed a three week, concert house, tour of Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Houses were sold out and the reviews saluted the show.
2000 Norway discovered WATERLOO in 2000 and a long collaboration started, establishing WATERLOO as the number one ABBA tribute band in Norway.
WATERLOO performed their second Belgian show at a state fair. The audience of 10,000 people were thrilled, and the show was a complete success. Everybody agreed; this is the number one ABBA experience you could ever have, since the original ABBA stopped touring.
Later the same year Katja and Camilla were selected as one of ten contestants in The European Soundmix Contest, "Stars in Euro Eyes" which was held in Manchester that year. The final was broadcasted, and in UK alone it had an audience of over 16 million viewers.
Katja and Camilla also collaborated with The Swedish Travel & Tourism Council, performing at the successful 'ABBA exhibition', of the original ABBA costumes, which toured around Sweden. Through The Swedish Travel & Tourism Council WATERLOO has also represented Swedish music at several occasions, both domestically and internationally.
By now WATERLOO had authentic copies of five different ABBA costumes from different periods of the ABBA era. 1998
WATERLOO continued to establish them selves in the Swedish market and went to Belgium for their first international performance. After the concert Katja and Camilla were in a taxi on the way back to the hotel, when the driver suddenly turned around and said, "You look exactly like ABBA!" This speaks for itself. In fact, anybody that has had the opportunity to see and listen to WATERLOO can agree that it is a very convincing show. They could easily be taken for the real ABBA. It has always been extremely important to WATERLOO to achieve and keep the sound as close to the real ABBA sound as possible, without using pre-recorded backing tracks. To achieve this they decided to add a 10th member to the band, a saxophonist and keyboard player. This also made it a lot easier for "Benny" to fully focus on the piano. This year they also created another set of authentic costumes. Who doesn't remember Agneta's white dress with frills and Frida's spangled mini-skirt, from the very first ABBA tour.
1999 During the spring WATERLOO went to Thailand for a 10-day tour of luxurious hotels, in Bangkok.
Later this year Katja and Camilla performed as "Agneta & Frida" in the Swedish version of the international TV-concept, "The Soundmix Show" (UK: Stars in Your Eyes). They won this season's final by impressing the audience with their performance and professional approach. Entering the stage and sounding, looking and moving as the original ABBA girls.
